May 1-4: Energize your May with Goshen College, who hosts Argentinian drumming group Che Malambo. The Shipshewana Flea Market opens this week (get all your “as seen on TV” items and bamboo sheets early!) Pop into Elkhart’s Midwest Museum to see their exhibition, The Northern Indiana Artists Envisioning a Future, Remembering a Past.
May 5-11: If First Fridays aren’t your thing, check out Ballet Hispanico, which is the last dance performance of Debartolo Performing Arts Center’s season. Fortunately, Wednesday Wine Walks (!) season begins this week; the samples of food and wine while walking around downtown are well worth the price. If you haven’t checked out the Box Factory in St. Joseph, MI, their Exhibition Opening Party this week would be a good night to pop in after you stroll through Antiques on the Bluff, and then you could continue on to Holland, MI for their Tulip Time Festival (which goes through next week). Chesterton’s European Market is expected to open this weekend, too.
May 12-18: For as many Chicago food trucks that I have enjoyed, I am not familiar with any at Lincoln Park Zoo’s Food Truck Social. Yay for new foodie experiences! That pairs nicely with your visit to the Chicago Craft Beer Week. We’ll be spending the weekend in Chicago for Mother’s Day and the Renegade Craft Fair pop-up (happiness!). I’ve lived in South Bend for eight years, and I still haven’t attended the Fischoff Chamber Music competition; hoping this is the year! And The Snite begins the area summer music season with the launch of their Summer Jazz Series.
May 19-25: There is great music all month long at The Livery in Benton Harbor and The Ark in Ann Arbor, and I’ve been wanting to see The Sypian Family Band for ages. This might be a good weekend to check out Turkey Run State Park or a hike in the Indiana Dunes, before the rush of the summer crowds. Blue Moon Vintage Market has a Chalk Paint class this week; their monthly market opens the following week.
May 26-31: Canoeing and kayaking officially begin at St. Joseph County Parks on Memorial Day weekend! If the water isn’t your thing, check out the 18-hole disc golf course. Prep your Memorial Day weekend with Mole de Mayo in Pilsen! In South Bend, check out the 94th Annual Westside Memorial Day Parade to launch your Best.Week.Ever experience and celebrate the best of our community; visit again for Westside Wednesday. Enjoy the the South Bend Cubs (and fireworks!) all weekend long.
A late addition:
Kites and kites! Check out the 29th Annual Great Lakes Kite Festival on May 20.
The South Bend Chamber Singers wrap up their season with Misatango on May 21, featuring all sorts of loveliness.
